I have a boot of the clutch cargo show. Old band mate/friend actually recorded it. He said that Paul was trying to rouse people by saying he was Youth. I brought this up to Paul decades later and he vehemently denied it and then busted out laughing.
So there you go

I don't personally find it odd they did not do a studio version. Clearly they
were batting around ideas with their new bassist during touring and it most
certainly is not the only time a KJ song has been scrapped. :)

Looking closer to the Larry's Hideaway gig in Toronto that HA was recorded from
on the 9th August 1982 of which unfortunately there is no full setlist detailed,
the closest gig with full listing to that was on the 7th August 1982 at Clutch
Cargo, Detroit. I would reckon the setlist would be nearly if not all exactly
the same.....

The Hum
The Fall of Because
Pssyche
Chop-Chop
The Pandys Are Coming
Take Take Take
Sun Goes Down
We Have Joy
Empire Song
Change
Bloodsport
Complications
Wardance

I wasn't suggesting that was the only time they ever played it, but it
seems odd that they never did a studio version. It's possible I'm
being too cynical, though - I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Now that's a proper set list! What a tragedy there was a technical
problem, it was obviously a blistering performance.

Jamie: were you pronouncing it to rhyme with "car" - all posh like?!
If so I think maybe you deserved their contempt!

That is a very cynical viewpoint of E'G ;), no such tactics "Take Take Take"
was
part of their repertoire circa 1982, a quick look on setlist.fm<http://setlist.fm> confirms
that.

The latter half of 1982 with a few gigs in the US and Canada then back to
the UK
shows them including a few songs from 'Fire Dances' recorded in
February-March
1983.

I can assume that with the newly assigned Raven on bass they were in the
process
of writing and trying out songs for the forthcoming album, "Take Take Take"
is
one that hit the cutting room floor. Seeing that "Ha" was rushed out in
November 1982 and as you say the recording machine broke if anything is
cynical
it is E'G cashing in on what few tracks they had.

I have always noticed very much a similarity in tone but amended chord
progression and tempo between the guitar riff of "Good Samaritan" and "Take
Take
Take".

Maybe "Take Take Take" was considered alongside "Sun Goes Down" as a B Side
for
"Birds Of A Feather", who knows, although a studio version does not look
likely,
I am sure with remasters etc we would have heard it by now.

This is a setlist from Glasgow on 26th October 1982, same setlist on 27th
October 1982 in Manchester.

There are bootlegs out there of other songs recorded at the same gig
(actually two nights?) including Birds of a Feather, I think. Yes,
apparently the recording machine broke because someone (Conny Plank?)
used tape that was too heavy. There answer is in The Gathering
archives somewhere. Mike Coles was reading some posts out to Geordie
   and he commented on this.

I always assumed Take Take Take was deliberately left off everything
else simply to increase sales of Ha!. KJ were never above such
tactics, particularly in the E'G years.

Never too late, eh...

TTT. No idea! Not really the greatest of songs so maybe they
didn’t
bother
with studio time. Shame really for documentation....

I'm sure these questions have been covered before but what with
the failing memory these days, I'll bring them up again.
Anyone know whether there were more songs recorded at the Ha
gig,
or was this in fact the whole gig? If there were more songs, why
have
we not heard them?

and

Take Take Take - what is the story behind this song? Why was it
never
on a studio recording, and was it ever played any other time
apart
from
on this tour? Has Jaz or anyone from the band ever spoken about
this
song?

These things still bug me, 35 years on.
