Because Autoconf simply trades one set of problems for another?  And it kind 
of sucks?

Compared to what?  To Ruby, it's a screamer.  It's all relative.  My point 
is only that giving "advice" to others based on _your_ criteria isn't going 
to be particularly constructive.  You can say "It's a lot slower than a 
compiled language", but that's different than "don't waste your time".
