October newsletter=85

GREETINGS for October as the days get shorter and colder, and the =
hillsides are dotted with the yellows and reds of leaves changing amidst =
the evergreens. We=92re freezing a hefty crop of our homegrown basil =
with a little oil in ice cube trays and making piles of applesauce from =
our very own trees. The smells are wonderful, and wherever you are, we =
hope the smells and colors are pulling you into a new season. We=92d =
love to know what you think of this online newsletter =96 useful, =
fascinating, waste of time, just another thing to do in an already busy =
schedule, too long, too short, whatever. Be honest and let us know=85

TO CHEW ON=85 Barbara Kingsolver ends her essay "Small Wonder": "I have =
stories of things I believe in: a persistent river, a forest on the edge =
of night; the religion inside a seed, the startle of wingbeats when a =
spark of red life flies against all reason out of the darkness." I =
started making my own list of "stories of things I believe in" =96 the =
reassuring love of family (sometimes quirky and wonderfully =
unreasonable), the tea-warm comfort of a song, the pin-prick reminder to =
the conscience of a courageous moment, a hillside greening with rain. =
There are stories behind each of those phrases. Do you have some of your =
own? In a time when we think about "bottom lines," the abstractions of =
surveys and percentages, and sound bite conclusions to complicated =
issues, we need reminders of the reassuring details of stories we =
believe in. We also need family and friends to tell them to.

RECENT EVENT=85 Sept. 11 I did an assembly at Wing Luke Elementary =
School in Seattle as a kick-off to a residency I=92ll do there =96 two =
days a month between now and early Feb, with a big family sing at the =
end. Talk about diversity! Sixteen languages are spoken in the homes of =
those kids, so it=92s going to be fun to see how songs and language work =
in that environment. For 5 years, this public elementary school has had =
a full-time dance teacher (and self-proclaimed "arts worrier") and each =
year they arrange for an additional artist to be there too. Pretty =
amazing support for the arts, and as I learn more about how they=92ve =
done it, I=92ll let you know.
